Bruichladdich The Organic 2009 Single Vintage Expression Single estate Organic Single Malt.
Mid Coul Farms, Culblair Estate.
The very first barley exploration experiment was in 2003 with organically grown. The organic movement was in its infancy and viewed with scepticism but the idea of barley grown in a manner that our great grandparents would recognise was very much in tune with the belief in natural whisky. Quite simply, organic farming works in harmony with nature, nourishing the soil with sustainable practices as opposed to conventional farming where the soil is maintained through artificial inputs.
Crop rotation is key. The organic barley from Mid Coull farms must take it its turn in a seven year cycle that also produces grass for organic cattle and sheep, oats, beans, carrots and a megawatt of green electricity. Well nourished, well balanced soil produces healthy, strong plants which are generally cultivated for flavour not for yield.
Working with William Rose of Mid Coull farms since 2003, the Distillery have experienced both highs and lows as one year 40% of the total needs were supplied from his organic farm, in the next however the entire crop failed. Respecting the land, the soil and the climate nourishes a genuine and thorough understanding of terroir and the results are pure Bruichladdich.
Nose: Candied orange and lemon, beautifully floral.
Palate: Deliciously creamy with the barley notes very much to the fore.
