Ardbeg
Ardbeg is one of the most renowned whisky brands in existence yet it tales the vast majority of its Islay neighbours in terms of sales. This is partly due to the interrupted periods of production at the distillery over the last few decades. Since 1997 when Glenmorangie bought the distillery, the onus has been on building stock rather than immediate sales; they are planning for the future.
The first record of a distillery at the Ardbeg site was in 1794 and had been founded by Alexander Stewart. By 1798 the MacDougalls were active on the site through Duncan MacDougall and in 1815, the current distillery was founded by his son, John MacDougall.
Ardbeg are also famous for their annual special releases and this year, their 200th anniversary is marked by Perpetuum.
