Surprisingly to many, there were multiple English whisky distilleries in operation throughout the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.
Even more surprisingly, much of the production from the Bristol distillery which had been founded in the 17th century was shipped to Scotland and Ireland to help to make up various blended whiskies.
Production of English Single Malt ceased around 1905 and the trade fell silent until it was resurrected by the St Austell Brewery with their Cornish Single Malt in 2003.
