Single Malt Whisky is undoubtedly the most prestigious of the various varieties and is most strongly associated with Scotch Whisky production, although Single Malt Whisky is in fact produced all over the world. The Japanese also produce some fine Single Malt Whiskies but unbeknown to many, the Japanese whisky industry is over 100 years old.
Single Malt Whisky is required under Scottish Whisky Regulations to be made wholly from malted barley, it must be distilled by the pot-still method at a single distillery and it must be aged for at least three years in oak casks residing in Scotland that do not exceed 700 litres in capacity. It also must be a minimum of 40% ABV.
