The distillation of whisky in New Zealand first started around the 1830's with the arrival of many Scottish settlers and it thrived for almost half a century. Towards the end of the 19th century, new Government regulations almost shut the industry down completely.

From the 1950's onwards, the industry began to re-emerge and grow for a period before slumping again. In 1997, Foster's bought the last remaining Kiwi distillery but chose to mothball it, sending the stills abroad to produce rum.

Hopefully one day the industry will be resurrected in New-Zealand!
