One of the relatively new kids on the block, the Arran Distillery is nestled beautifully in a valley by the village of Lochranza on the north edge of the island.
Founded in 1993 by Harold Currie, the distillery has truly done itself proud in its short lifespan, offering a wide range of expressions and limited releases as well as being named Scottish Distiller of the year in 2007 by the whisky Magazine. Over the years they have dabbled in some unusual cask finishes with one of the current crop, an Amarone Red Wine cask finish being up there amongst my favourite whiskies.
In addition, the distillery also produces both a single malt and blended "Robert Burns" whisky as well as an award winning cream liqueur.
Island - 70cl / 50%
The nose has aromas of poached pears and honey which are followed by toasted almonds. The palate is fruity with dark chocolate, cherry and Turkish delight flavours. Muscular notes of dark plum and bitter-sweet apricots. The finish is well balanced.
Island - 70cl / 46%
A wonderful whisky with vanilla, banana and kiwi fruit aromas. A touch of cinnamon adds a spicy edge to the soft and sweet texture which captivates the palate. The finish is sweet and syrupy.
